Ten Types of Computers
PC- “Is any general-purpose computer whose size, capabilities, and original sales price make it useful for individuals, and which is intended to be operated directly by an end-user with no intervening computer operator. This contrasted with the batch processing or time-sharing models which allowed larger, more expensive minicomputer and mainframe systems to be used by many people, usually at the same time. Large data processing systems require a full-time staff to operate efficiently”. Wikipedia
Desktop- “A desktop computer is a personal computer (PC) in a form intended for regular use at a single location, as opposed to a mobile laptop or portable computer. Early desktop computers are designed to lie flat on the desk, while modern towers stand upright. Most modern desktop computers have separate screens and keyboards.” Wikipedia These computers are not designed to be portable.
Laptop-
“A laptop computer is a personal computer for mobile use. A laptop has most of the same components as a desktop computer, including a display, a keyboard, a pointing device such as a touchpad (also known as a trackpad) and/or a pointing stick, and speakers into a single unit. A laptop is powered by mains electricity via an AC adapter, and can be used away from an outlet using a rechargeable battery. Laptops are also sometimes called notebook computers, notebooks, ultrabooks or netbooks.” Wikipedia
Netbook- “Netbooks are a category of small, lightweight, legacy-free, and inexpensive laptop computers.” Wikipedia Netbook internal components are less powerful than an average computer.
PDA- “A personal digital assistant (PDA), also known as a palmtop computer, or personal data assistant,] is a mobile device that functions as a personal information manager. PDAs are largely considered obsolete with the widespread adoption of smartphones.” WikipediaThese computers usually do not have keyboards, but use a touch screen and usually come with a stylist.
Work Station- “A workstation is a high-end microcomputer designed for technical or scientific applications. Intended primarily to be used by one person at a time, they are commonly connected to a local area network and run multi-user operating systems. The term workstation has also been used to refer to a mainframe computer terminal or a PC connected to a network” Wikipedia
Server- “Web server can refer to either the hardware (the computer) or the software (the computer application) that helps to deliver Web content that can be accessed through the Internet” Wikipedia Can provide other services to other computers over a network. Backs up its own data.
Mainframe- “Mainframe computer are computers used primarily for corporate and governmental organizations for critical applications, bulk data
processing such as census, industry and consumer statistics, enterprise resource planning, and transaction processing. The term originally referred to
the large cabinets that housed the central processing unit and main memory of early computers. Later, the term was used to distinguish high-end commercial machines from less powerful units. Most large-scale computer system architectures were established in the 1960s, but continue to evolve." Wikipedia An ATM is an example of mainframe.
Supercomputer- “A supercomputer is a computer at the frontline of current processing capacity, particularly speed of calculation. The term "Super Computing" was first used in the New York World in 1929 to refer to large custom-built tabulators that IBM had made for Columbia University.” WikipediaCan costs thousands to millions are dollars and are best known for thinking. They think about global warming, the green house affects, and they can also think about scenarios.
Wearable Computer- “Wearable computers, also known as body-borne computers are miniature electronic devices that are worn by the bearer under, with or on top of clothing.[1] This class of wearable technology has been developed for general or special purpose information technologies and media development. Wearable computers are especially useful for applications that require more complex computational support than just hardware coded logics.” Wikipedia
